This Guideline is for the purpose of registering qualified Auditors, Trainers and Consultants who are competent in the application of the principles of auditing management systems in accordance with Management System Standards and acceptable equivalent standards.

The criteria against which an Auditor, Trainer and/or Consultant is evaluated are reflected in the education, experience, training and skills required to be demonstrated by a management system Auditor during an audit.

During the development of this Guideline, due consideration was given to the provisions of the management system standards and the auditing guidance standard; ISO 19011

This document also provides information on:

  • The registration process and the method of application.
  • The criteria governing the initial registration of applicants.
  • The criteria governing the monitoring of registered auditors, trainers and consultants.
  • The criteria governing renewal of registration, including the requisite training.
  • Types of audits required of auditors for registration.


2.1 The scope of registration covers the following management systems standards: ISO 9001, 14001, 17025, 22000, 27000 and OHSAS 18000.



3.1.1 Auditor

This applies to an auditor that has the requisite training, appropriate personal attributes, academic, professional and technical competence and the required auditing experience.

3.1.2 Lead Auditor

This applies to an experienced auditor that has passed the requisite Lead Auditor’s training course and has demonstrated ability to plan, manage and lead in the successful execution of audit programmes.


3.2.1 Academic Qualification

The applicant must have successfully completed a senior secondary school education with a minimum academic qualification of WAEC/NECO or its equivalent.

3.2.2 Formal Audit Training

The applicant shall have formal audit training in the current version of Management System Standard.

3.2.3 General Work Experience

An applicant shall have work experience of 2-4years (depending on academic qualification) Applicants with secondary school education or ordinary National Diploma (OND) only must have completed at least 4 years full time work experience. Applicants with Bachelor’s degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) level qualification must have completed at least 2 years full-time work experience.


3.3.1 Auditor

To be registered as an Auditor, an applicant shall successfully complete a minimum of 5 acceptable audits. The auditing experience shall involve document review, practical participation in audits and audit reporting. All audit experience provided in support of application must be verifiable and shall not be less than 30 audit hours.

3.3.2 Lead Auditor

To be registered as Lead Auditor, an applicant shall successfully complete a minimum of 10 acceptable audits 3 of which must be as Team Leader. The duration of these audits shall not be less than 60 audit hours within the 2-year period prior to registration.

3.3.3 Pupillage Provision

An applicant, who satisfies conditions in 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 but who has insufficient, or no acceptable auditing experience, shall undergo Pupillage programme to qualify for registration.

Note: 1. Periods of training will not be considered as eligible toward meeting this criterion. 2. SON accepts Certificates from recognised institutions but this is verifiable.


4.1 Application Form is issued to an applicant on payment of a non-refundable fee of Ten thousand Naira (N10, 000.00) payable to Standards Organisation of Nigeria

4.2 To apply for registration, completed application forms are to be submitted to SON with necessary documents and photocopies of relevant certificates.

4.3 Applicants are advised to provide valid information/documents to avoid delay in processing of their application.

5.0 FEES

Registration fees shall be as follows:

5.1 Auditor: Thirty thousand Naira (N30, 000.00) only

5.2 Lead Auditor: Forty thousand Naira (N40, 000.00) only.

5.3 Renewal for both categories: Ten thousand Naira N10, 000.00 per annum


6.1 Review of Applications

Secretary of the SON Auditors and Consultants Registration Review Team shall check all applications for adequacy and make sure all information provided is correct.

6.2 Technical Evaluation

SON Auditors and Consultants Registration Review Team shall evaluate the information against the registration criteria, perform verification of all the information and make recommendation to the Director General of SON. Care shall be taken by the Review Team to safeguard the integrity of the registration process.

6.3 Registration

Applicants for Lead Auditor registration may be required to attend an interview organized by SON. Registration shall be granted after full compliance with the requirements. The registered auditor’s details are entered in the Register of Auditors maintained by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON)


7.1 An acceptable audit shall consist of audit of not less than 6 hours excluding any break. This excludes all follow-up or close-out audit of a part of Management System Standard that is repeated more than once a year and audit that does not cover the elements of the management system standard.

7.2 All acceptable audits shall have been performed in accordance with the guidance standards and have been in line with the requirements of the relevant Management System Standard or acceptable equivalent
